Linear Functions - Exercise 1

Give justification for each step showing that the equation of the line that passes through the point (3,-2) and is parallel to the line with equation 2y - 4x = 6  is  y = 2x - 8.

STATEMENT JUSTIFICATION
A line that passes through the point (3,-2) is parallel to the line with equation 2y - 4x = 6.

2y - 4x = 6 may be written as 2y = 4x + 6

2y = 4x + 6 may be written as y = 2x + 3

y = 2x + 3 has slope m=2

A line parallel to y=2x+3 also has slope m=2.

The line with slope m=2 containing (3,-2) is y-(-2)=2(x-3)

y-(-2)=2(x-3) may be written as y+2=2x-6

y+2=2x-6 may be written as y = 2x - 8
